Child Safety Advice  > Travelling with Children

It is not a difficult task to ensure that children travel like "responsible adults" sat correctly in their safety seats, or when they are older, with their belt buckled.

Here is some advice that may be useful when seating children and buckling them into their seats.

Explain the rules clearly to your children: for example, the vehicle cannot be turned on until everybody has their belts buckled.

Choose the right time to explain the rules: do not do it when you are agitated or when the child is restless.

When you seat children and buckle them in, explain what you are doing, so that they are also involved in the action: "and now we're going to fasten your belt...".

Offer rewards during the trip: something to eat such as fruit, raisins or other dried fruit, a song, or a story.

Distract them while you seat them and fasten the belt, e.g. by talking to them about something outside the car or something that they are going to do when you arrive at your destination.

Do not punish them. In effect, punishment will only suppress undesirable behaviour, it will not encourage desired behaviour.

Ignore crying and complaining and do not lose your calm.

Try to ensure that the child can see your face, even if this is in the rear-view mirror. This way, you can also see if the child has undone the harness or belt.

When choosing the safest system for your child, consider the following recommendations:

Keep babies in a seat facing rearwards whenever possible, and pay special attention to the indications of the seat manufacturer.

Keep small children in a convertible seat with harnesses whenever possible. Keep older children in the integrated seat or use a booster cushion until it is clear that they do not need it.

Do not attempt, either for convenience or because the child insists, to use adult seat belts until their geometry is compatible with the height and development of the children.
